Some songs connect because of marketing. Others connect because people genuinely feel something when they hear them.
For us, “Lo Tenías Callao” was always one of those records that felt different from the moment it was created.
Even before it became one of our most streamed songs, we knew there was a certain soul to it that stood out.
The idea for the song was brought to us by Andrés “Dirrty” Gavillán during one of our songwriting camps. Dirrty is one of our favorite collaborators and one of the top liners we’ve worked with for years. Beyond the music, there’s a real friendship there, and every time we create together, there’s a chemistry that naturally happens in the room.
That energy became a huge part of this record.
At its core, “Lo Tenías Callao” is a heartbreak story, but emotionally it always felt deeper than a traditional breakup song. Rhythmically it lives inside bachata, but melodically and emotionally it carries a strong R&B influence.
The vulnerability, harmonies, and storytelling reminded us of the kind of emotion that made records like Dru Hill’s “Sleeping In My Bed” timeless. That balance between R&B soul and urban bachata naturally became part of the identity behind the song.
One of the moments that immediately stood out to us while writing was the line:
“Dando la mamá de la mamá allá abajo en Samaná.”
When we first heard it, we were blown away.
It felt cinematic, detailed, unexpected, and real. Those kinds of lyrics instantly paint a picture in your head and give personality to the story. It became one of those moments in the record that people naturally remember.
When it came time to shoot the video, we chose Brooklyn, New York intentionally. We wanted to pay homage to the roots of modern bachata and the Dominican culture that helped shape the genre’s evolution in New York City over the years.
There’s history in those streets when it comes to bachata, and visually it felt like the perfect place for this story to live.
Another detail a lot of people may not realize is that the story of “Lo Tenías Callao” continues emotionally into our next single, “Insomnia.” We’ve always loved the idea of records feeling connected to each other beyond just singles and playlists — almost like different chapters of the same story.
To this day, “Lo Tenías Callao” remains the song people connect with the most.
And honestly, we think that comes down to one thing:
the soul of the record.
